Why spreading the word on apprenticeships is so vital.

As an Apprenticeship Ambassador at Oxfordshire LEP, Leona Weston goes into schools and colleges to listen to young people's views on apprenticeships and speak to them about why apprenticeships are so vital to the UK economy.

Why spreading the word on apprenticeships is so vital.

"Monday (4 March) marked the start of National Apprenticeship Week 2019, an initiative that aims to celebrate and promote the range of apprenticeships that are available across the UK.

This year’s awareness week coincides with National Careers Week, a scheme that aims to ‘link education with the world of employment’, to ensure that when young people leave school, they are fully prepared to enter the world of work.

As an Oxfordshire Apprenticeship Ambassador, these are familiar objectives, with the role itself based around going into schools and speaking to young people about apprenticeships, and how these experiences can work for everyone.

As an Apprenticeship Ambassador, one thing I am really passionate about is dispelling old-fashioned outlooks on apprenticeships, with many people being unaware of the higher-level and degree apprenticeships that are out there.

Having been part of the scheme for the past year, I can honestly say that spreading this message and talking to students that are contemplating what to do with their future about my experience with an apprenticeship, has been an incredibly worthwhile experience.

As part of this role, today I joined Mel from OxLEP Skills, going along to join Abingdon & Witney College’s Apprenticeship Week stand at Templars Square, in Cowley.

This is just one of the opportunities I have had to help promote apprenticeships in my role as an Apprenticeship Ambassador, a role that allows me to go out and meet new people, as well as ultimately inspiring the next generation.

As I continue through my apprenticeship, I look forward to spreading the word on apprenticeships further, through this valuable scheme, and the work of OxLEP Skills- and this is something I would encourage any apprentice or organisation to be a part of."
