Encouraging young women to take up opportunities in STEM related industries.

Anne-Marie Mountifield has been the Chief Executive and Board Director at the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership for the last 7 years. A member of the Institute of Directors, and the National Maritime UK Council she is also a 'Women in Maritime' ambassador. Here, Anne-Marie outlines her role encouraging young women to take up opportunities in STEM related industries.

Encouraging young women to take up opportunities in STEM related industries.

As the Chief Executive of a region wide and international organisation that works with partners in all types of sectors, from industrial to commercial, education and local authority I encounter women forging important paths in their own sectors. I am thrilled by that and by being in a position where I can make a real contribution to encouraging young women to take up opportunities in Science, Technological, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) related industries.

The Solent LEP has had an impact in the wider world encouraging a generation of young women to reassess the way that they look at their careers. At the Solent LEP we spearhead STEM as a career pathway for all schoolchildren, and schools have been the latest to benefit from our support.

In our Enterprise Adviser Network, which pairs secondary schools with local business leaders, 50% of the volunteers are women in business. The Network has been recognised as a national leader, topping the 2018 Careers and Enterprise Company's State of the Nation report, and I am sure that this is in no small way because of this strong female representation.

Investing in young people, including young women, by providing them with the right pathways so that they can benefit from future job opportunities is crucial. We are working to enhance information, advice and guidance available to learners and investing to improve all stages of their career pathways. This type of encouragement early on will support the development of a world class skills base in the Solent, made up of as many young women as young men. This will help ensure our local young people are equipped to access the new opportunities on the horizon, and to secure our industries of the future.
