Invitation to join ADEPT

The Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning & Transport – or ADEPT – is an active and growing organisation, with membership up 40% in the past two years (including 13 LEPs).

The Association represents ‘Place’ Directors from county, unitary and metropolitan authorities, along with Directors of LEPs and Corporate Partners drawn from key service sectors. Every day our members work to build successful local economies, sustainable communities and resilient infrastructure. Through our boards and working groups, ADEPT provides a unique opportunity to contribute to research and development, examine new approaches and develop / influence policy with colleagues from different professional backgrounds.

Our priorities are People, Planning & Place, as set out in our Strategic Plan 2017-20 (see here). Current work areas include EU Exit, the Industrial Strategy and housing, alongside growing issues such as air quality, waste, digital provision and energy security.

We operate a unique system of technical working groups, subject and sub-national boards which support members by sharing good practice and technical expertise, facilitating strategic thinking and providing networking opportunities (see here for more detail). There are four national Subject Boards:

  • Engineering
  • Environment
  • Transport
  • Planning, Housing & Regeneration

Each of these is supported by various technical working groups, some of which operate regionally as well as nationally. The Boards interact regularly with key government departments, agencies and professional bodies; they also organise technical workshops and other events.

We organise a number of events each year for which ADEPT membership secures a substantial discount:

  • Annual Dinner (June) – always a popular occasion at a high-class venue which attracts around 150 guests, including key figures from central and local government, public sector agencies and professional bodies. Includes presentation of the ADEPT Annual President’s Awards.
  • Spring Conference (June) – an opportunity to take time out from the urgent and reflect upon the important, to consider changes in government policies and plan for the future. Our recent Spring Conference focused on two critical domestic policy issues: local implementation of the Government’s Industrial Strategy, and delivering housing. Policy position papers on these issues were finalised and published following the Conference discussions.
  • Autumn Conference (November) – a lively and stimulating two-day event, with 150-200 delegates, 30-40 speakers and a range of more technical workshops. Last year’s successful conference focused on ADEPT’s core purpose: being first for place and fit for the future, examining what the future holds and our role as place shapers. The 2018 conference will look at how we actually create those places by delivering sustainable growth for thriving communities, striking a balance between our future facing role as place shapers and our delivery role as place directors. As Place Directors, LEPs, Combined Authorities and commercial partners, we are all united in creating thriving communities. We all have a role in delivering place-based services, enabling and delivering sustainable economic growth, housing and critical infrastructure across the UK. We would be delighted to welcome LEPs to the conference, and are happy to offer the reduced ADEPT Member delegate rate. Click here for more details.

The LEP membership fee is £210 per year. To find out more, click here or contact ADEPT’s Chief Operating Officer, Hannah Bartram (hannah.bartram@eastsussex.gov.uk).
