A major Scaleup Summit took place on 15 November at Wylam Brewery in Newcastle with over 250 delegates registered from businesses around the North East.

Jason Legget, Programme Director of Scaleup North East welcomed the scaleup community to the first RTC North produced, Scaleup Summit. He then introduced Chief Executive Officer of the ScaleUp Institute, Irene Graham who delivered key data from the Annual Scaleup Review 2018 citing that scaleups businesses employ 3.6 million people and generate £1 trillion in turnover across all sectors in the UK. 

Irene Graham then invited a panel of speakers on to the stage with Colin Bell, Business Growth Director from North East LEP, Joanna Berry, Associate Professor, Durham University, Gillian Marshall, Entrepreneurs’ Forum and Geoff Lawrence, General Manager, Vistage UK who discussed the importance and impact of scaleup’s to the region’s economy. The North East LEP area has 780 scaleups, with 102 visible scaling organisations including Barbour, tombola and Ryder Architecture. The area generates £11bn in turnover, creating 68,267 jobs. The panel discussed the importance of leadership development, access to talent and innovation for companies to scale successfully.  

Sabby Gill, Managing Director UK & Ireland, Sage delivered a presentation on Digital Transformation for Scaling Businesses stating that businesses waste an average of 27 days and £38bn through outdated administration systems. Successful companies that harness technology grow faster and have tech in their DNA.  He looked at the importance of harnessing talent and what key skills scaleup’s require from graduates and school leavers with technical and social skills being a priority.   

Delegates then heard from successful leaders building their businesses in the North East who are currently taking part in the Scaleup North East programme, Ross Tompkins from Therapy Direct, an occupational physiotherapy and associated musculoskeletal service; Stacey Rogers, founder of online personalised gift company, Not Just a Print and Christian Brock, from hedgehog lab, a global technology consultancy that designs and builds software for an international market. They were joined on stage by Scaleup Partner Craig Huntingdon, an expert in scaling businesses having scaled three of his own firms in the last 15 years. 

The panel centred around the value of the advice and support each company has had from their Scaleup Partner from being a sounding board for ideas and reassurance that they are on the right track to developing marketing plans, raising finance, product development and connecting them to new markets. 

The final presentation of the day came from Dr Roy Stanley, who shared how serendipitous events can trigger high growth. He discussed the importance of networks, talking to peers and attending events, all key to building customer, supplier and peer collaborations.
