“LEPs have a vital role to play in delivering strong local economies. As business-led partnerships they are at the heart of responding to skills needs and building local industrial strategies that will help individuals and businesses gain the skills they need to grow. “I was really impressed by the commitment of the LEP Chairs to achieving local economic growth, and the projects they have initiated are a clear reflection of the value they place on building an economy that benefits us all.”

Local Enterprise Partnerships play a vital role in supporting businesses and innovation across England, developing skills, delivering infrastructure, and securing investment. That’s why our Modern Industrial Strategy is clear that they must continue to play a crucial role in our plans to deliver further growth in local economies. By working even more closely together, we will continue to maximise our efforts in creating jobs, growth and investment right across the country, delivering long-term, meaningful results for local communities.

This is an important year for the local growth agenda. As set out through our Industrial Strategy, LEPs will play an increasingly active role in delivering an economy that makes the most of the opportunities available across the country as we leave the European Union. It is important that we continue to work together to strengthen LEPs so your leadership can drive ongoing growth and investment decisions as we design the UKSPF.

It’s great to have Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). They bring government and businesses together to drive growth. If a road needs upgrading, the LEP can make it happen. If a new railway station will bring more jobs to the area, the LEP can secure the funds. If local people need more training, the LEP can organise it. It’s a good way of putting the community in control of the economy.

In the five years since I joined you for the first LEP conference in Coventry, I have been delighted to see the real impact Local Enterprise Partnerships are making across the country. Together you have invested over £15 billion in projects and programmes - boosting local economies and creating quality job opportunities that are improving people's lives and their communities. I believe that local business leaders and local authorities must work together to make the best decisions for their area. This Government is pushing forward with the most ambitious devolution of power in a generation and business must be at the forefront of this. Now is the time for Local Enterprise Partnerships to get involved in devolution deals and tell us what you can do to drive growth. The achievements of LEPs are to be commended, but there is more to be done. So let me wish you a productive and enjoyable conference, and I look forward to seeing and hearing about what you come up with.

LEPs play a central role in driving local economic growth and the relationship the LEP has with business is a vital ingredient in enabling business to grow and progress. The role of the Leicester and Leicestershire LEP was pivotal in enabling IBM to open a new services centre that will position Leicester as a hub to provide high value technology services to businesses across the UK.

Delivering growth outside of London will be absolutely crucial if the UK is to maintain its place among the world's fastest growing developed economies. Harnessing the combined wisdom of leaders in business, education and local authorities will help the Government to ensure that creating prosperity remains the centrepiece of further devolution. Businesses stand ready and able to play their part.

In the post Brexit world, the role of EU Structural Funds will be changed completely. It's how we transition from that world, into a world where business support becomes much more a role for LEPs, and we believe you are absolutely the right organisations to drive that, and we are wholeheartedly behind your role in that in the future
